Autumn has to be my favourite time of year for taking photos. The light is low and golden; the background colours are deep reds, yellows and greens. It is both flattering and fleeting. One moment we are astounded by the changing colours, and the next minute the first big storm has rolled in and the leaves disappear overnight. (I say'disappear', but someone has to remove them from our lawn!!)
To really make the most of the season during your family photo session, it is a good idea to think about the colours that you will wear. While spring and summer call for neutral tones and pastels, autumn is an opportunity to be more bold in your choices. You could opt to complement the natural palette and choose yellows, reds and browns. My personal favourite in photos is to include dark blues, purples and greens, which are opposite the autumnal hues in the colour wheel, and so help you to stand out against the natural backdrop.
As ever, I would urge you not to rush out and spend money, but do look through your options at home and above all, be comfortable! If you are worried about straps, waistbands and wriggly children in uncomfortable outfits, you will find it more difficult to relax and be yourself- which is of course our main aim!
Pinterest can be a good place to start to look for inspiration. I highly recommend taking a look at the talented Nina Mace's board.
Autumn family photo shoots can be booked in Hertfordshire over the next couple of months, with many beautiful locations close to Welwyn, St Albans, Hitchin and Harpenden. Get in touch soon, as availability is quickly disappearing! I still have some weekend dates at the beginning of November, which gives enough time for prints and wall-art to arrive before Christmas.
