Every time the Royal Family release a new family photograph, particularly of George, Charlotte and Louis, there is a media frenzy. People are as keen to catch up on how they have grown and changed as they are their own relatives! Often these are taken by their mother Kate herself. But who else is a royal family photographer? They have also been captured by royal family photographers Matt Porteous and Christopher Jelf.
The most popular are those that show real connection and joy. The viewer feels as though they a part of the moment. This is what I set out to achieve when I take family photographs in Hertfordshire and London. Those images that show the love and the emotion of family life; the fun and the excitement.
Location
Royal photographers know that the best location for photographs like this is in the great outdoors, where people feel at their most relaxed. Just being ‘outside’ is not always enough – portrait photographers look for locations that benefit from beautiful light, and that frame their subjects well without being too ‘busy’. Posing
Another feature of the most popular royal family photographs is the natural and relaxed posing. Traditional studio posing certainly has its place, and there are many people who love this style of portrait; however for me, chatting and playing with families whilst gently directing them into the good light is what creates the most friendly, relatable and memorable photographs to treasure.
Editing
Great editing is also crucial. Just like ‘barely there’ make up, a surprising amount of editing of tones, and sculpting of the light, goes on behind the scenes to create a natural yet beautiful image. Cameras are amazing things, but sometimes they need a little help to recreate the memory as we saw it! And just like make up, it can be taken too far, too! A fine balance and a good eye is always needed.
