What to wear to your family photo shoot

Hints & Tips

If you are thinking about your Hertfordshire family photo shoot, you are probably also wondering what you should all wear. I’m here to help!

I generally advise against the ‘matchy-matchy’ look, but instead encourage you to coordinate outfits with a common colour. For example, a palette of blues and greys, or earthy tones can work beautifully together. It is always wise to think about the colours in your background and work from there. Bluebells and spring greens call for neutral pastel colours of contrasting pops of yellow; autumnal parkland would suit deep blues, reds and mustard. For lifestyle sessions at home, consider where you are likely to sit and play. And importantly, where will you hang your framed images? If you have a neutral decor, will you coordinate this with whites and greys, or do you want your images to pop with bursts of colour?

Above all, go with what suits your characters and makes you comfortable! If you all love to wear wellies and princess dresses, go for it! Your children love a hat? Brilliant! If they live in dungarees, capture that. The last thing you want is to wear something brand new, scratchy and uncomfortable, otherwise you will be thinking about that instead of having fun with me. My goal is to capture your personalities and your connection in my images, and I’ll do that whether you are wearing box-fresh linen or dinosaur outfits 😀

Once you have an initial colour idea sorted (and let’s face it, you’ve probably chosen your favourite outfit and will figure out what everyone else will wear based on that!), look carefully at what is in the wardrobe and try to stay away from big logos or busy patterns as these draw the eye away from your lovely faces and become the first thing that we notice when looking at the pictures.

A great tip is to use the Coolers website. Click ‘start the generator’ and hit the space bar until you spot a combination that you love. You can lock in particular colours, for example the purple of the bluebells or the deep red of the poppies at your chosen location, and find the perfect match.
